How To Get Started
The Journey to Better Health
Most of us already know whether or not we are healthy. We have that desire to be healthy and live an active lifestyle, but the process just seems too overwhelming. Well, admitting the need for change is the first big step towards establishing a new mindset.
When I began my journey to attain better health, I focused on a certain goal, which was to have a healthy child. At the time, I weighed more than what was comfortable for me, but losing weight was not my ultimate goal. Fortunately, I learned that a healthier weight was a byproduct of developing a healthier life style.
The lesson that I learned was that nothing changes until you make up your mind. The focus of any program should be to get healthy. Although it has been my passion to share my story with everyone, I often mention the African-American Christian community because we rank first in having the highest number of preventable diseases.
I have learned that many of us have a great disconnect between our physical, emotional and spiritual selves. Our witness should be holistic in approach because God made all aspects of who we are. Our brothers and sisters that embrace other religions sometimes exemplify much more self-control and discipline. It is my desire to remind us that we have the power and the responsibility to take care of the temple that God has given us. Each of us have our own particular struggle, but no one is exempt from living a better life. The outer self should be a manifestation of the inner strength, hope, love, perseverance and self-control that we are striving to develop.
There is so much talk in the media regarding the weight crisis in this country. This concern should not be ignored and taken lightly. The African-American past is a story of struggle, but not the plethora of physical diseases that we now face today. In the past, we were wise enough to recognize and trust our innate ability to listen to our bodies and act on what we knew to be the best to care for our different ailments. Our ancestors knew to cleanse the body at the change of every season? Whatever happened to that wisdom?
Do you know how much cleansing positively affected their health? Conversely, I have talked to many people, parents in particular, who are totally unaware that daily elimination is a foundation for better health. Our ancestors ate fresh vegetables and fruits because they did not have the option of fast food restaurants. Exercise was not a some time option, but a way of living. We must embrace the basic elements of living that sustained our ancestors through slavery and the civil rights struggle.
My goal is to be a better witness to the world in all aspects of my life, to become a physical manifestation of who I am becoming on the inside.
