The Importance of Healthy Cooking Oils
Think of your body as a smooth running machine. Don’t you want to know how to make that happen? One way is to make sure it gets well lubricated. It is essential that we understand the importance of healthy fat in our diets. I encourage you to search information based on the writings from the American Heart Association and Mayo Clinic. Choose oils high in Polyunsaturated fats and Monosaturated fats. Do this by reading the label on the oils before you purchase.
We need to incorporate not only high quality foods but also high quality fats.I particularly like olive oil and safflower oil for cooking and sesame seed and macadamia and coconut oil for baking. However, there are other high quality oils such as, almond, peanut and avocado. You should choose oils that are low in saturated fat. Think of good fats as lubricating your arteries.I choose not to use Canola Oil. Every other oil you can trace back to the source but with Canola, don’t you wonder where it comes from? There is an interesting article on www.bhawkindustries.com.
Flax seed oil can be beneficial for several physical ailments. This can be used in salad dressings or taken in a pill form or liquid form in a bottle.
In our home I use Earth Balance spread instead of butter or margarine. It is non-hydrogenated, which means it won’t clog the arteries. This brand has several different versions. I get the one that doesn’t contain canola oil. It has a great buttery taste so you can use it in all of your baking recipes. Sometimes I also use it for my pie crusts and biscuit recipes. Trying substituting and let me know how you like the outcome. Remember this is about enjoying your food without it killing you, so be open minded.
If you are on a tight budget, I recommend that you start with safflower oil. It tends to be closer in the price range of regular vegetable oil. If you can please start buying olive oil. This would be a great choice. If you must fry, try using peanut oil. This gives the foods a nice light flavor. However, limit the fried foods as much as possible. If you are in good health you can treat yourself to fried foods occasionally, especially if you exercise consistently.
